I have never heard of this one amongst my many Scottish inlaws, but can it be some sort of suitcase - two gwan (gang) away with? My MIL would said "och, g'wan with you" - but that might have just been her particular saying.
^^ typo "to gwan with"
It's a new one on me too...and I've lived in Scotland most of my life.

Is it spelled out like that ?

As boxtops says, g'wan is heard often enough...as it is is Ireland (Father Ted's housekeeper) ...meaning 'go on'.
a canvas bag? Can't find it in my dictionary -maybe different spelling. Women used to wear heavy aprons to do rough work. My granny called it her gwanny apron
I've just phoned two of my north-east friends. They both said it was a canvas or hessian-type sack sometimes used for potatoes. We pronounce gwanna.
Trust the cheuchters!
Is not Granny Bag the correct term?
-- answer removed --
I haven't heard it for ages but it was used in the north-east. Maybe it's an obsolete Doric word now but my friends recognised it right away- I've just phoned my 98 year-old auntie and as soon as I said gwanna bag she said "It wis a bag for hauding tatties or grain." So it must be a cheuchter word!!
Hello, mike11111, No I don't think that it's a granny bag. . Pretty sure it was a type of material like hessian . Must be an Aberdeenshire word I think.
Sorry, knowimust, I just can't find the word gwanny in any of my Doric books or dictionaries.
Definitely a "granny bag". My gran had one. It doesn't mean a specific make, etc., just a capacious bag that old(er) women carried about with them all the time, that seemed to contain everything except the proverbial kitchen sink.
