About a hundred were first cooked by Molly C???L?D
I thought of coddled, but not sure?

Love came close without (say) being sexed up

Having thought about it, I'm sure the second one is CODDLED as you suspected
C- ODD (a hundred odd = about a hundred) LED (were first)

The whole meaning cooked (association with "mollycoddled")

Thanks ingocnito.  How I didn't get led to be first I don't know!!  Just the other one to get now.  I did think of SHORT WORK, but didn't get it?

The first one is SHORTWORK
SH (sh=peace) OR (au =gold, as does or) TWO (pair) RK (religious knowledge)
