Spot on quinie, and you were very quick too. I googled SKITE just now and hey presto! Thanks
octogenarian, my Scottish Dictionary gives the meaning of slade as slid-past tense of slide. The word skite can have iots of meanings eg a small quantity of any liquid -a "mouthful" of spirits: a sudden blow delivered sideways (a coorse bairn used to get a skite on the lug!) - there are other meanings which I won't go into.
