How's it done?

If the first digit is x, and the second digit is y, the number is 10x + y

Adding the two digits gives x + y

Subtracting that sum from the original number gives (10x + y- - (x + y) = 9x

So the resultant number must be a multiple of 9. The table of 'hieroglyphs' allocates the same symbol to all multiples of 9, so that must be the symbol a

Like this Jem:
Think of a number between 1 and 10
Multiply it by 9
If the result is a two figure number - add the two figures together
Minus 5
Make the number that you are left with correspond to a letter of the alphabet (A=1 B=2 etc)
Now think of a country that begins with that letter
Now think of an animal that begins with the SECOND letter of that country.

No, I was getting confused, all my answers were multiples of 9 and I just wasn't paying attention to the symbols changing each time; see how it works now!
