"Daniel" got to no. 1 in the US Billboard charts but only got to no. 4 in the UK. I suspect this is the answer though.

The dates are births of British monarchs. For example George V was born in 1865, Edward VIII was born in 1894 so the next date would be the birth of George VI. According to Wikipedia this was 14th December 1895.
Will be fascinated to know answer to number 2. Pretty well up on pop and nothing comes to mind. Will try to check later. (mamy, if you mean Daniel it was not number one
