An excellent start to the year, from a setter who provided the Listener's Xmas puzzle just two weeks ago (Great Expectations) - one has to particularly admire the use of full words in the "abridged definition" - thanks, Samuel and HNY to one & all ....

are 6 dn and 8 dn properly clued? feeling the effects of 4 dn myself so can't be sure.

6d leaves me confused .... it HAS to be an "I" to make anagram of "alien" work out in wordplay, but clearly must be an "A" to fit the answer to 17A .... And in 8D why are the "U R" the wrong way round when ascending ? .... 'Tis a shame we have such quibbles as rest of puzzle is top-drawer IMHO .... (I also thought 13A could lead to answers - if you allow the German "B" flat as "H"....)

Afternoon all. A very well crafted puzzle, in my view. I share the query about the UR being the wrong way round in 8dn, but I think 6dn is allowable, as A is a local variant of I according to the BRB.

Agree that this was a good puzzle, harder for me than this week's Listener. I agree on the UR in 8d.

I'm glad to have found this thread - saves me any further worry about 6d and 8d.
It took ages for me to get a toehold on this one - as you say dr b more time consuming than this week's Listener - but well worth the effort in the end!

Happy New Year everyone, an enjoyable and challenging start to the year. I agree on 8d. How are everyone's leaves, snow, fruit and guests? Normality is restored here for the time being.

Happy New Year to all. A good puzzle for today. Guests gone, snow gone and leaves??.... I've no idea! I had a small problem with 6D but got over it quite quickly....hey! it's the holiday season. And, AndrewGS, some fruit left and far too many chocolates!
