thank you everyone, and thankyou bibblebub for the explanation. I am now stuck on one down as I had put garden as the answer, and now it seems it is obviously incorrect because it will begin with the letter aitch from home page. The clue for one down is plot here to raise what's owes to support house. 6 letters.

HOTBED = HO (house) followed by 'debt' reversed = TBED

p.s. 1a letters he = HE
nicked = put ^ outside of ...
a good poem adapted = anagram of a+g+poem = OMEPAG [in this instance]
