I don't know the answer to this one nelios, but if it is a cryptic clue for a creature of some kind, I wonder if it could be Grimalkin or Greymalkin - a kind of evil cat creature. Malkin is a dialect word for scarecrow. I can't fit in the "Old Jem" bit though.
