13a rough indicates an anagram, patchy must mean not every letter of 'guess' viz 'gess' in this instance, so an anagram of 'gess' with D=500 inside. ???

Unfortunately an anagram of gess with 'd' inside does not make edges. This is really a stinker to define.

I didn't notice that either! I can relate "edges" to "inches" but the rest of the clue is a mystery - as is the case fairly frequently in the Skeleton!
