Vending machine is 'automat' + 'a' for automata = mechanical toys.

An automat is a fast food restaurant where simple foods and drink are served by coin-operated and bill-operated vending machines.

Automata are robots.

I have to confess answering based solely on the ''toy robots'' part. It was the only word I could see that fit.
