The Burning Field

Yet another one:

Two boys are playing football outside a field of wheat which 12 foot high walls surrounding it. The boys each stand 5 feet tall. One of the boys kicks the ball over the wall, into the field. Both boys then run through a door into the field to retrieve it.

Once inside they discover 2 things. The door can only be open from the outside, there is no handle on the inside of the door, so it cannot be reopened. Also, to the north of the field, there is a fire burning steadily in a line from east to west. The fire is slowly travelling southwards, towards them.

The field is 100 ft by 100 ft. There is now no way out of the field, no way of jumping over the fire or quenching it.

Within half an hour the fire will reach them, if they do nothing, they will be burnt alive.

How can they save themselves from this fire?

If they're both 5ft then with their hands in the air they'll be around 7ft tall. So one boy holds his mate with his hands aloft, the other boy grabs the top of the wall and pulls himself up and over then opens the door to let his mate out. I suppose now you're going to say there was broken glass on the wall or that the boys had no arms - in which case - who went in goal?

Oldgrape, you are on the right track. The Fire is at the northern end of the field, 50 feet away from them. It willt ake half an hour to reach them, at the middle of the field.......

Trevilino, your right, there is broken glass on top of the wall and anyway they're not strong enough to do as you suggested.

They are stuck in the field......and he fire is getting closer

They move East and North as the fire burns West and South. With a bit of luck the fire will have burnt out in that corner and they'll be able to feast on corn on the cob.

if one boy stands of the other boys shoulders that takes him to 10 feet high. If he puts his arms up he should be tall enough to pull himself up and climb over the wall. He can then push open the door from the outside and let his pal out.

P.S. Caz - He'd have to stand on his mate's head to be 10 feet high. Stood on shoulders would be around 9ft 5ins.

Right, now give me a 5 min start to leg it........

They each take a sheaf of wheat, go up to the north end of the field, set alight to their sheaf s of wheat. They then go back to the middle of the field and start a new line of fire from east to west.

Half an hour later, the first fire has reached them......but they just walk over the already burnt out wheat where the second line of fire is now 50 feet away, just about burning itself out at the south end.

Result, they are completely safe...........though the Farmer will not be pleaseed.

Boo, they don't have to go through any wall of fire, just go to the edge, then set alight the sheaf of wheat they've taken.

If they burn an area in one of the corners, it'll burn out. They'll then be able to stand there and wait for the fire to reach them. When the fire reaches them, there'll be no wheat left to burn so the fire will fizzle out.
