120 players = 60 doubles teams in order to get 32 teams for the second round 4 teams get byes and 28 matches are played, then 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1

If the bye is applied at the 15 team stage i.e. 30 matches then 15, then 7 matches and a bye the total number of matches is the same.

All this presumes a regular style knockout of course

In questions of this type you don't need to work out the number of byes etc only the number of "knockouts". To whittle 60 down to 1 needs 59 matches.
