For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ. helium (what happened there?) has a lower atomic weight than air( that is a generalised mixture of nitrogen ,oxygen etc.) so it is displaced upwards by the surrounding air. such as anything that floats on water. ie 1 litre of helium weighs less than 1 litre of air, as 1 litre of polystyrene weighs less than 1 litre of water so the polystyrene floats on water.the helium floats on the air( or attempts to)
