what have we seen on the horizon tonight?

Four lights in a row across....HUGE, VERY POWERFUL lights - appeared to be perfectly round in shape, exactly the same brightness and equally spaced apart.
Not in the sky...... but on the horizon

I took pics with my phone camera at just before 7pm (daylight), 7:30pm (dusk) and 8pm (dark)

It was noted that they had gone/been switched off by about 8:50pm. We estimate that distance-wise, if they are actually lights, they would each have to be as big as a house. Interestingly, on our photos, they each have a small light underneath them too. We have ruled out stadium lighting from the football ground -they would not be pointing just in one direction, towards our house, and would not be that big enough to be seen from such a distance (poss about three miles away) and we have ruled out floodlighting from roadworks on the nearby motorway (M62) Huddersfield area, as again they would not be big enough to be seen at such a distance.

Could it have been an aeroplane flying low, with its headlights on?

If it was an extraterrestrial craft, that would be SO exciting.

I do hope so.

It will be a shame if it turns out to be something mundane.

Exciting, joggerjayne? If all an extraterrestial craft is going to do is show four lights for an hour it might as well have stayed on Planet Zluyg. Boring, these Zluygians - always have been, my grandfather use to tell me.

If it's just lights on the horizon then how was the distance estimated in order to know that each light was as big as a house? Toy cow in your hand or real cow in a field?

You know how you get a mirage in a desert?.... Well maybe its as boring as roadwork lighting being reflected through the atmostphere due to atmospheric conditions.

I have no idea what it could possibly be but by definition it was a UFO (not Flying saucer) simply Unidentified. Some pics would be great if you took any? I know I would have.

How could you tell that they were on the horizon and not just aligned with it? How far away is the horizon in that direction? What colour were they? When they disappeared, did they move away or just vanish?

its most definitely is a UFO if it hasn't yet been identified!!
