How do grasses disperse their seeds and reproduce?

As far as I know most grasses have flowers and seeds. Small though. They disperse in the wind. Not sure how they get pollinated though.

Birds too i think.  As in, birds eat them (perhaps inadvertantly whilst nest building - am i being ridiculous?) and then, frankly, poo them out elsewhere.  Just a thought.

Grass pollen is carried by the wind - just ask any hay fever sufferer.

Was talking about this today and I was about to ask the same question.
I need to buy grass seed every year to fill in spots in my lawn. Why does the grass not spread naturally? And why have I never seen my grass produce seeds like the ones I buy?

I don't mean to hijack your question, ccyy1993. It's just that I'm clueless and interested.

Not sure but I think the point of cutting a lawn regulalry is to stop the grass from going to seed and looking unsightly. Grass verges etc never seem to have bare batches except where people use them as paths etc.

i have a lawn and continuosly cut it in the hope that the feild type grass that grows in tuffs will dissapere and the lawn grass will take over but nothing seems to happen. does the grass like spread perhaps ? like the roots expanding and new grass comming up ?
