THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF A CIRCLE IS 22/7 x THE DIAMETER SO ---IF YOU INCREASE THE DIAMETER OF A CIRCLE FROM 2 INCHES TO 3 INCHES,THE INCREASE IN CIRCUMFERENCE IS 3.142 INCHES.
IF THE CIRCLE DIAMETER IS 1 MILE[66360 INCHES]AND IS INCREASED BY 1 INCH,THE RESULT IS THE SAME-3.142!
IF THE EARTH WAS A PERFECT SPHERE DOING THE SAME CALCULATION WITH THE EQUATOR WOULD YIELD THE SAME 3.142 INCHES!!!
LIKE I SAID, IT DONT SEEM RIGHT.
PLEASE WILL SOMEONE PUT ME RIGHT!

The 3.142 is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter, not a measurement - the ratio will always remain the same, no matter how big the circle.
That's 22/7. 3.142 recurring. Computers have been running trying to find out when it ends for years.
Try not to shout mrspask (all capitals)....you're deafening me and it's against the rules (sharp intake of breath lol).
I know what you mean. It is counter-intuitive, but it is indeed the fact.

A couple of examples:

Circle with 10 inch diameter has a circumference of 31.42 ins
Circle with 11 inch diameter has a circumference of 34.562 ins and the difference is 1 x 3.142 inches.

Circle with 10,000 ins diameter has a circumference of 31,420 ins
Circle with 10,001 ins diameter has a circumference of 31,423.142 ins and the difference is 1 x 3.142 inches.
Yes, if you put a rope along the ground on the equator all around the earth and another rope 1 metre above the ground all the way round the earth, the second rope would only be around 6 metres longer
It doesn't seem right to you, but it seems exactly right to me, mate!!
If the earth was a cube and you increased it's sides by one inch you would get an extra inch on each side so it's (square) diameter would increase by 4 inches.
johnny37 // That's 22/7. 3.142 recurring.//

No it isn't. Recurring means a repeating pattern in the numbers. Pi has been calculated to 10 Trillion digits and there is still no recurring pattern.
... and Pi is not 22/7 either- that is just an approximation for it
and it is 142857 which recurs in the decimal expansion of 22/7, not just 142

Incidentally, if you need a rational approximation to pi, 355/113 is good enough for most purposes.
Why do you call yourself nescio when it should d be scio?
Irony ?

err..
I think you mean 3.14159
I don't get it either.

factor30 ...//Yes, if you put a rope along the ground on the equator all around the earth and another rope 1 metre above the ground all the way round the earth, the second rope would only be around 6 metres longer//.

I make it over 6000meters! Where did I go wrong?
Ooops, I see it now. duh.

For the purpose of this little observation,it doesnt matter if Pi is 22/7 or 3.142******,its obvious I did geometry at school a long long time ago but I cant get my head around" 3.142 inches"!!!
Sorry! Of course I meant 'and so on'. Would 'ad infinitum' be correct?
How to remember Pi to 14 decimal places:

A slight deviation from the OP but I thought you may like it.
