Scurvy is caused by a deficiency of Vitamin C, so fresh fruit and vegetables.  I always think of sailors as having scurvy, when they were on long voyages.  Apparently, it can lead to bleeding gums and organs!

The British Navy used to issue Lemons and Limes to avoid scrurvy, that's why us Brits are known as "Limies"!

Lemons used to be known as limes and they were introduced to the Royal Navy by Captain James Cook. lso, I think it is spelt "limeys".
