i have yet to understand, even partially, just what this weird particle is and why eggheads are so excited about it.
That's probably because rather asking and listening you refer to people who do understand it as 'eggheads'

When the LHC was started the then Science Minister William Waldegrave offered a prize of a crate of champagne for someone who could describe 'What is the Higgs boson and why do we want to find it?' on a side of A4 that could be understood by a prime minister.

In my opinion that's a crap explanation. On second thoughts maybe I shouldn't have said that as I am now obliged to come up with a better one.
