Re Birds at Night

I found the answer to how and when birds sleep at night in the Animals & Nature section.  But I'm still wondering how well they see in the dark.

Most birds, other than nocturnal, have very poor eyesight in low light conditions. It's a thing I sometimes used to apply when I used to have a pet budgie and wanted to return him to his cage. If it was during daylight I would draw the curtains, putting the room into a semi-darkened state. It was then quite easy to pick up the bird.
Nocturnal birds of prey are another matter. They can see reasonably well in very low-light conditions. Birds such as owls mainly use their highly developed sense of hearing to detect prey. They are practically silent in flight, which enables them to pick up sounds from small mammals on the ground.
