Famed Scientist

A famed scientist was born locally did most of his research in USA. He has no acknowledgement locally. How could I bring his achievements to the fore and would I need any permissions ?

Have you got a local history society (or other organisation associated with the betterment of your town or village)? If so, you could get them involved and seek to get a plaque put up, a road named in his honour or perhaps have his name linked to some sort of local award or bursary?

Perhaps you could write an article about him (and his work) for your local community newsletter?

Is there a new housing development in your area? If so, you could ask the developer to consider naming a road (or perhaps a block of flats) after him.

Perhaps there's an existing building (such as a community centre or health centre) where you could campaign for his name to be incorporated into the title?

Once you've got something started you could let your local newspaper know about it.

If you keep shouting the scientist's name long enough, someone will eventually take note!

Interesting.

I can see an article coming headed "What's the link between Langley and disposable nappies?". I'd like to suggest some possible places where that article could be placed but Wikipedia says that there are at least 12 places called Langley in England, so I don't know which one you live in/near.

I would possibly write to him first and see if he would be happy to be acknowledged locally for his achievements in science, some people like their own privacy and would not want to be out there in the public eye.

That aside, I would go to your local paper and see what they could do. I think they would be more than happy to write an article for an unsung hero.

See LostSoulx - if he is still alive then it should be his choice as to how much publicity he receives. If he is in agreement, more than likely he would want to vet your contribution. Assuming all of that is okay, you might then look on wikipedia for a site for well-known people with his surname. Unless it is an unusual name there will be one. From there you can edit in the name of your scientist, with a one line description. From there you can also create a separate wikipedia stub which could be accessed from the generic site by clicking on the name of your scientist. From there, if you wish, you can put more information into the public domain by building your own website (I recommend wordpress) which is linked from the stub.
