I know that a copper wire will have magnetic tendancies when a current is passed through it, but WHY does this happen? I think it must be something to do with electrons creating a field around the wire

Too many years since I last took a school physics class but yes, it's to do with electro magnetic fields IIRC. If you have moving electrons that creates a electric field which induces a magnetic field. Do a web search for electro magnetism for details.
