I remember a documentary with John Cleese and Liz Hurley, about facial symmetry - turns out Ms Hurley has a perfectly symmetrical face, which makes her attractive to a large number of people.
The Male equivalent it seems is Tom Cruise which personally I find less easy to understand - I can think of loads of men whom I think are more attractive than TC - Leonardo DiCaprio for instance, but it's based on science so I guess it's true.
As far as Ms Hurley is concerned, I think there are two types of men in the world - those who think she is utterly ravishing, and those who don't know who she is, but that's just me.
Interesting debate ...

I have found many who are considered beautiful, completely unattractive and vice versa, handsome ditto. I have also seen that some are very beautiful to look at who become ugly within a few minutes of speaking. Beauty doesn't only mean humans though, there can be beauty in many things, and if you learn to see beauty you will find it, if you expect to find ugliness you will find that too.
Having grown up with a sister who everyone we met found stunningly attractive I felt I was not. This was reinforced be two partners and even my mother who would introduce us by saying the pretty one is Barbara and this is Annette( my old name)
I hated mirrors
I expect there are many out there who have a distorted view of what beautiful is, and of their own attractiveness and of course there are cultural influences too.
But remember you can have a beautiful soul, a beautiful mind, but it won't get you past the doorman at an upmarket nightclub,

Deskdiary - // I’ve always felt what one finds attractive is hard-wired.
Ever since I first discovered girls I’ve always had a ‘type’ - slim and auburn. I can objectively see other women are attractive, even though there’s no attraction. //
I'd agree - I think most people gravitate towards specific aspects that attract them, and as you say, they appreciate attraction in people who do not meet their 'type' but don't feel that attraction.
