if the universe is infinite, what shape is it?

if it is, then it has no shape (unless it is of a continuous shape that appears to be infinite).

The universe, as seen by current thought concerning the Big Bang's starting point (in time) for the universe, indicates one of three probable shapes. All of these have in common a 2 dimensional (flat) aspect. One would be a flat sheet of paper, having limited thickness. Another would be a "saddle" shaped affair, and the last, a funnel with a near infinite small end. The size, according to one source is 1.9 � 10^33 cubic light years in volume. Or, if you like, about 156 billion light years wide. The universe, although finite in size has no discrenible edge. The fact is, scientists don't know what the shape of the known universe actually is.

another theory, to add to clanad's 'thoughts', is that the universe is the shape of a torus (i.e. a doughnut).

It depends if the mass is evenly distributed , this will effect the shape of the universe as mass distorts space-time

ummmm, to observe the shape of something, u have to withdraw from it to look at it. how can u stand back from the universe?
