Don't know but I think you've discovered the next wonder diet!

some of the physiological responses that occur in such a situation sometimes inhibit the function of the digestive system. best thing to do would be to try some relaxation techniques.
ask them to take their tongue out of your mouth-- sorry merry xmas

you are entering the stress response. your desire to impress your love puts pressure on yourself which acts as the stressor. the stress response was primarily used during the millions of years of human evolution in order to escape from sabre tooth tigers or to fight with wolves and such like. the idea is that you have about 5 minutes in which you will either be savagely killed or will escape. this is commonly known as fight or flight. during this 5 minutes, your immune system, bowel muscles, cell growth etc are not terribly important. instead all of the energy is diverted to the major muscles of the body. this is an extreme response to extreme situations which is what stress is for. the digestive system is one of these many processes that are shut down temporarily to aid in fight or flight which also effects the throat which is why you get a dry mouth and/or a lump in your throat when nervous or scared or excited etc. during the time that your digestive system is shut down you are unable to comfortably swallow food as you have no saliva and will not be able to digest it anyway. likelihood is that you will see the food again pretty soon after trying to swallow. ever seen someone puke from being nervous? nowhere else for it to go.

my suggestion to you is to A - eat well before you see your lover in order to give you time to proccess your meal and B - try to relax. turning the stress response on and off frequently can lead to serious health problems such as stomach ulsers and strokes. although you will no doubt become familiar quickly enough with your love, it is a general rule that you should follow. take it easy. stress wasnt designed to cope with people being overworked. it is for running away and unless that is what you are doing, try to relax.

damn...nice response boobesque
You've been reading too much Cosmo and have somehow become convinced that Hollywood stars get by on half a lettuce leaf a day : you're stressed about now eating, especially in front of the man you're trying to woo, in case you put on 57.8 stone.

Stop reading Cosmo, chew your food well, spoon smaller amounts into your gob rather than half the plate at once and don't (ever) ask "does my bum look big in this?".

Aside from my nonsenical answer (boobesque's is more reliable) I hope you get over this - it can't be the most pleasant thing to occur to anyone. Especially not at a time when you should be enjoying someone's company!!
All the best.

what makes you think a women posted this stevie21? Men get nervous too, its not just us women who read cosmo

boobesque, you're replying to the nonsensical part of my post. Even I don't believe what I typed so I don't expect you to! :-)

Anyway - stereotypically (and I'm not claiming that's a foolproof measure) this is more likely to be the type of thing a girl would post. I could be totally wrong.

The main thing is, the problem itself will pass with time but if we can speed that along AT ALL then all the merrier!
Your first post was very instructive (I wish more of mine were as useful) and I'm making no attempt to be argumentative here.
that so happened with me with each of my 4 ex boyfriends? I couldn't eat infront of them. However that never happened with my partner that I am with now. Maybe it was a sign to say the lads weren't right for me?
