" Repeating the same tired mantra that it is false or fantasy is intellectually jejune."

That also describes religion.

I have learnt many years ago to never argue with an idiot, They will bring you down to their level then beat you with experience.

Radagast. // If you want you prime mover idea to be accepted, you have to cite and experiment or discovery that would disprove it. Otherwise, it's bunkum.//

“Eppur si muove” (“And yet it moves”)  said Galileo  😄

^^^ Yes he did - contradicting the religionists!

No less revolting than their ignorance is the arrogance of those who presume knowledge.

A quote from Galileo is not an experiment or discovery that could disprove your prime mover idea. There's a reason science doesn't accept such ideas - they're of no use - no further inquiry is possible.

Conjecture is not necessarily nonsense. It merely means no, or insufficient evidence has yet been found for it. In some cases we may suspect there is no way to gather such evidence in which case it won't reach the dizzying heights of being a hypothesis.

Until it reaches the level of theory folk are at liberty to believe it or not, since, unless a better explanation comes along, or maybe even afterwards too, then it may be true but unprovable.

Believe in an aware mover if you wish, but perhaps expect that discussion in spiritual/religious debates. I get the feeling that as this thread in in the science forum it was scientific conjectures that were hoped for.

Yet the OP is challenges to our 'understanding', which clears the ground for certain aspects of subjectivity.

I wholeheartedly agree with that (not very original) statement. That is what I find daily by wasting time, between more serious matters, on AB. 😄

Khandro, can you answer my question please?

> I have challenged you (or any of your cohort) to come forward with another better explanation, which you don't (and can't).

Yes, there are better explanations, and that's why many people of science and rationality believe those explanations. And at the same time many others, like you, don't, for some reason(s).

//Conjecture is not necessarily nonsense.//

Fair point, I shouldn't have called it bunkum.

Radagast, OK, no problem.

Ellipsis; //Yes, there are better explanations, and that's why many people of science and rationality believe those explanations.//

OOOH goody! Let's have some please, I'm all ears .

Question Author

Khandro, you appear to be ignoring me.  I guess you don't know 'why?' then.  Not surprised.

Is a god any more or less likely than our living in a simulation?

Oh no, we're breaking out the drugs now.

naomi: If you are referring to your monosyllabic question at 08:19 - the answer is that neither you, nor anyone, can produce a better explanation. Am I correct ?

Question Author

I can't explain it, Khandro, and neither can you - the difference between us being that you won't acknowledge that.  Maybe the fairies did it.

God as cosmic creator is unlikely - it's too human. God as some sort of community spirit would at least explain the provincial nature of religuon.

There are thousands of different Gods, thousands of different stories made up. No story is more true than any of the others.

//I have learnt many years ago to never argue with an idiot, They will bring you down to their level then beat you with experience.//

This is true. Sometimes the stupidity is so great though, it's impossible to remain silent.
