Is the really bright star south the pole star?

18:06 the pole star is above the north pole. Pointed at by the 2 left side stars of Ursa Major.

the southern cross is not visible in most of the northern hemisphere.

The Southern Cross can only be seen in the Southern Hemisphere. 

It must be Sirus then, very slightly S/W and very bright white

You may struggle to view the moon if you are inland or oop North just yet. It is easily spotted along the South coast of England though. 

A great app to have on your mobile phone is one of the syk maps that is available. 

Star Tracker from the google store is a good one.

18:26 sirius is pointed at by orions belt. Find the 3 main stars in orions belt, trace directly down diagonally left if that is the star then it is sirius.

Sirius is currently below the horizon.

Just been out to have a look. It's an absolutely beautiful starry, planetary night. Flippin' freezing though.

Jupiter, Mars, Orion (Betelgeuse) and Venus but no moon as yet.

the moon is a thin crescent just below Venus and to the right.
