I have heard that some parts of the world can be in a different year to us, let alone two or three hours ahead or behind. Has anyone else heard of this and is it true

No this can't be true because we are all one planet and a year is one circle round the sun, so no it is impossible, although some religions/cultures have a different calander eg islam is about 500 years before us because they started when mohammed was born i think, well something like if you are a muslim please verify for me
Another part of the world may be in a different year to us for a few hours on New Years Eve as due to the time difference, their New Year would come before or after the clock struck midnight here in the UK.

Fiji is 12 hours ahead of the UK at the moment. As I write this at 2347 on Saturday night, it is 1247 lunchtime on Sunday in Fiji. Thus, on New years eve, they get to the new year while we are eating our lunch on new years eve. In 1999 they got to the 21st century while we are still having our lunch in the 20th century.

Sorry dynamicduo but the 20th century ended at the end of 2000 not 1999.
not in fiji !!!!

It is true - from a religious prospective. While Christianity celebrates 2006, Judaism celebrates the year 5766 and Islam celebrates the year 1427. Not sure about the other religious though. (Anyone from these religions are welcome to correct me if they are incorrect).
