I feel ashamed asking this because I am sure the answer is basic, but here goes. If I leave the switch on, on an electric outlet but nothing plugged in, is it using electricity?

No - you have to complete a circuit - switch the plugged-in device on - to make the elctricity flow.

You should never be ashamed to ask anything - how else do we all learn? What is basic and obvious to one, is obscure and unknown to another, that's how knowledge is passed on.

If there were no Questions and Answers, what would a large proportion of people on here do with their time????
