Note though that you don't have to adhere to any rules or anything though. You can call whatever you want U. I personally think of it most often as either potential energy or internal energy. But you can give anything you want any letter you want.

There are the odd few standards that you really shouldn't change, such as 'h' for Planck's constant, 'c' for the speed of light, etc.
