You can call me a charlatan...anything...it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I know that I am on firm ground, as a scientist, when I say that mercury is a metal, and brass, bronze, steel, indalloy and anything else that you wish to throw at me that is not in the periodic table and is not liquid at "normal" temperature, is not. Trying to widen the boundaries does you no credit. I can tell that I've struck a nerve.

How many years did it take you to realise that you'd been misled?

Oh by the way, like it or not, certain Indalloy's are a liquid at "normal" temperatures. Try and do a bit of research before you make such an assertion.

It seems I missed your last posts on the previous page so I'll play along with your goading and reply here.

Believe it or not, insulting you and your views has never been my objective throughout this thread. Nevertheless, when someone adheres to dogma in the manner that you have and remains totally inflexible in their views, their knowledge is subject to question. Dogma displayed in the manner that you have demonstrated is certainly not typical of a scientist.

Further to this, your earlier suggestion that I hold a piece of an alkaline metal in my hand was both puerile and irresponsible and would not be a recommendation or suggestion I would expect from a scientist, especially a chemist.

When we factor in the vulgarity that you decided to use in a more recent post, I feel sure you will admit that your true position, age and qualifications are open to question, especially since you are obviously aware of it and have decided not to apologise.

Now whether you like it or not, your responses have allowed us to arrive at this conclusion and I would suggest to you that the only circumstances in which I can think that a chemistry graduate would resort to such irresponsible advice and vulgarity is when that person feels cornered simply because he/she lacks the ability to provide cogent counter-arguments.

It is typical of a cornered person to try to redirect attention to a foe and your assertions that you've "struck a nerve" etc would be what I would expect. Displaying the courage of your conviction is an admirable trait, but in your case, the frustration and impatience in shining through - something I would expect from someone who is determined to stick to their guns at all cost.

Throughout this thread, it is to be noted that you have not referred to any work in support of your claims over metals and alloys. There is a singular lack of quotes from academic texts such as Hawley to support your views. This is quite a unique position for a chemist to be in and is unusual to say the least. It is reasonable to conclude that you do not have access to such works and your ability to check on my assertions or confirm yours is non-existent. A working chemist should be able to access works of this nature.

Further to this, I have raised issues in these posts which you have decided not to reply to. Effectively, you have selectively replied throughout this thread. On reviewing the posts in question, it should not have been beyond the capability of a chemist to reply. Is it that you don�t know the answers?

You have not taken the opportunity to reply to my last two posts to date. All the same, I really can�t imagine you spending your childhood correcting adults when they referred to alloys as metals. The scope for contradiction is enormous and it would be interesting to know your age when you finally realised you had been misinformed. Do you really go around in everyday life correcting people when they refer to alloys as metals? Do you get thanked for correcting these people? I find the concept quite fascinating � I wonder what they tell you in the pub.

Your remarks regarding the entertainment you are experiencing regarding my posts are also typical of a frustrated poster adhering to dogma relentlessly with nowhere to turn for support. You are seeking support and none is arriving and I do sympathise. Nevertheless, your attitude would account for your admission over winding me up as it clearly has been made in an effort to redirect attention from your fragile posts. What you seem to forget is that, as you�ve pointed out, no one else is bothered so your attempts at humour are falling on deaf ears. Sad isn�t it? Ironically, the fact that you are posting when you are back from the pub should in theory, be of some entertainment value.

All in all, it clear here that you are the only one of the two of us who feels needled. You see shammydodger, your opinion of my status or qualifications is of no significance at all and whether you admire or abhore me is of no interest to me. Why do you feel that this is such a major issue? Clearly, your assertions on this matter demonstrate that you find such concepts essential in your own life and your statements reflect this view. It�s really not pleasant being lonely is it? Perhaps you can now see why I�m not deluding myself.

As a self-proclaimed 5-star fruit salad general of science, you ought to be able to appreciate that the species you talk about are not metals. I'm rather bored of this now. If you were incapable of understanding my posts, you should have said and I could have simplified them to fall within the boundaries of your intellect. It's been part of my job for many years.
