Their conclusion was that the passage of time as you experience it seems slower when you don't do very much, but that it seems to pass quicker when you are busy. On the other hand, when you are recalling memories, periods where you haven't done very much feel as though they went by quickly, whereas looking back on a busy period this doesn't seem so. This explains why the hours can drag but the years fly by! It's to do with the way the brain stores memories: if you don't do very much, there is little to store, and the perception of the amount of time that has passed depends to some degree on how much is stored.
