Earthquakes

I've just been reading about the earthquakes in Hawaii and i've noticed a lot of people's accounts include them diving for doorways to stand in. Is there any reason that standing in a doorway during an earthquake is safer than say lying on your couch?

If the wall falls down all will be clear, besides, this way you have a choice in which way you go.

Plus there is a frame round the door, and a lintel above, so you are unlikely to get hit by falling bits of the floor above. If you check out photos of partially collapsed buildings, you will notice that the door frames are standing up in the ruins.

The safest place to be is actually supposed to be under a sturdy table. Standing in a door frame is not supposedly as safe as it's made out to be.

Ah! So what if you drag the sturdy table beneath the door frame? Hmmm!
