Is there any potential to reduce the use of electricity for street lighting by using fibre optic cables?

Christmas trees with fibre optic lights do it already - could the principle be scaled up?

Besides, while fibre optic cable may be ideal to transmit light, is not very efficient at emitting it.

I do like your thinking however, Polly.
Perhaps streetlights could be set at a minimum illumination and have motion sensors which will turn them on to full untill 5min. after any motion has ceased.
