Where has the energy gone?

If you had a clock spring and wound it up tightly, it now has energy stored in it and is capable of doing work, ie running a clock, if you prevented it from unwinding and put it in an acid bath and dissolved it where would the energy go?

The energy would release while it was being dissolved. Once one part got weak enough, it would break and 'spring' out
