This can be proven by looking at primary sources of evidence such as newspaer articles book ect from the time. Or by use of archaeology to dig up old factories or to take soil sample to show increased use of coal or plants that thrived in city environments. I aaume of course that you are talking about the industrial revolution in the developed world as in LEDC's it is currently taking place as we speak.
