What is the "mean" in maths? When finding out the average. It is so long since I have done this I can't remember which one the mean is.

There are three types of average commonly used in mathematics; mean, mode and median.

In reverse order, the median is the middle value if all values are arrange in ascending order, the mode is the most commonly occuring value and the one you want is the value obtained by adding all the values in a set and then dividing by the number of values.

Yep, the mean is the everyday average we'd all calculate if asked.

2+3+3+3+ 4 +5+85+88+123

median = middle value : 4
mode = most repeated : 3
median = (2+3+3+3+4+5+85+88+123) / 9 = 35.1

Aye, well, that'd all be well and good if I put the last line as "mean = 2+3+3............."

To be totally pedantic, the mean just correctly described is the arithmetic mean.
There are also

the geometric mean - the nth root of the product of n quantities, and

the harmonic mean - the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of the reciprocals of the quantities
