Bats and their radar ears

Bats are almost blind, and use sonar to hear their way around, as we all know. But who discovered this and how?

With all due respect <romeo, bats are not blind. Those with the poorest vision can still see better than us. Most have very good eyesight and the fruit/nectar eating species have sight at least 3 times better than us.

The sonic ability is mostly used to track and capture their small prey and it is amazingly accurate. Those species can indeed fly with their eyes covered.... but they could not fly on radar and track insects at the same time, hence they need quite good eyes to eat and fly at the same time.
