Is there an experiment to demonstrate the cause - rather than the effect - of gravity on objects on the Earth?

If you figure that out, proceed post haste to the nearest Patent Office. One of the most intensely studied areas of Quantum Physics (especially relating to the Unified Field Theory) vs. Einsteinian Relativity is the nature of gravity. Every one agrees gravity is a force but no one can agree on how that force is transmitted... so good uck!
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) run by CERN near Geneva will shortly perform a series of experiments which may explain the nature of gravity and mass.
If a mass is placed in the Earth's gravity field it will experience a force called weight. We may shortly be able to explain why. Durham University's Department of Particle Physics Phenomenology is actively involved in this investigation.
yep all you need is to capture a little graviton and it's Nobel for you!

The graviton is the theoretical vector boson for gravity.
Finding a way to nulify gravity poses the same problem as perfecting the universal solvent, ( It can dissolve anything ). What the heck do you store them in ?
I can just imagine it.
