What causes the sound when water is heating in a kettle? When heated in an open container there is no sound.

I presume the heating surface is smaller boiling the water close to it while the rest of the water is still cooler. The pressure of the hot air above the water prevents the air bubbles from readily rising to the top as it would in an open container.
