I want to know what science folk think that 'live art' is, and whether or not its a valid and/or interesting form of cultural expression. Any suggestions and/or comments? Answers will be included in a june publication in Glasgow. Cheers,

Sounds like your article is already starting from the incorrect (and stupid) premise that the world is made up of scientists who don't understand art, and artists, who don't understand science.

Well said rojash. The sign of a true scientist - First analyse the question. Is it asking what it appears to ask? or is there some hidden prejudice that may invalidate the result?
I would also question the unspecified 'publication'. Is that supposed to give it some air of authority? By not stating what it is, we could always let our artistic imaginations run riot and suppose it to be the Summer Edition of the school magazine of Possil Park Junior High School.

It wasn't my intention to suggest that scientists don't 'know' what live art is, or even that the world is split into scientists who know nothing about art or artists who know nothing about science. Not only am I an avid reader of a variety of scientific publications, some of my best friends are scientists...including my brother! But I've obviously hit on some insecurity of some scientists out there... sheesh!
The point about Live Art is that it is a new (relatively) field which has no direct form or function or context. its not 'performance' and its not 'theater' or is it installation or is it all of that? The question was purposefully vague to elicit a variety of answers and not prejudice anyone into responding in a mediated way.
And the 'prejudice that might validate the response' is perceived. I have no specific 'angle' on what scientists think. I've asked a variety of folk to get a variety of answers, and use a good scientific method to increase the wealth of input.
The publication is an international, arts council funded 1000 copies distribution across the UK and over-seas. any more information required, please email: [email protected]. Website pending.
