blue smarties are back
I've just seen an ad on TV saying the blue smarties are back. What are they colouring them with? The only blue colouring I can think of is woad and I'm sure that's poisonous!

The colour sometimes comes from Spirulina, which's a marine plant, but the use of Blue No. 1, or brilliant blue FCF has coal tar as a component. This was banned throughout most of Europe, as coal tar in quantity is carcinogenic (when tested on rats in lab conditions). The EU allowed it's use again, however. I believe the Blue No. 2 is the one derived from seaweed, etc., and possibly the one used in Smarties, but I avoid them just in case!
I know! I don't think that jelly babies taste the same since they had to do something about the gelatin in them. This thread is probably in danger of descending into sweeties as they used to be typr of discussipon which should probably be in the food topic.
But look at this anyway!! It's great. Especially if you're a 50s 60s child like myself.
