Which element am i???
Can any1 please tell me which element this is referring to: I have in mind what i think it is, but have found some others it mayb!
I have the melting point of 708 degrees
i conduct electricity & heat well
i form giant structures with non metals
i form ions with charge 2+

Carbon occurs naturally in three forms:
Graphite is the purest form of carbon found in nature. Clear diamond is also pure carbon.
Coal is mainly carbon but not pure.
All other forms of carbon (soot, lampblack, coke, charcoal,etc.) are not natural (and usually not pure) but are commonly the result of heat of some sort.
I am puzzled by that fact that because the different forms of carbon are given different names you deny that they are carbon. Very odd. Do you deny that ozone consists solely of the element oxygen?
(By the way, you can burn diamond. And what you get is pure carbon dioxide, nothing else.)
I know that carbon is not the answer to the original question. I was merely taking up EDDIE1's extraordinary claim that graphite isn't an element. Cheers.

This discussion is extrodinary. But im still no further on!! if it helps the questions its self says - Element Z has the following properties, then lists the above. The following questions say which group of the periodic table is it PROBABLY in, would the oxide of this element have a high or low melting point. when diluted in Hydrochloric acid it gives off a gas. what is the gas called. I am at a total loss, i have been thru several elements but none match. Pleassssssse some1 help.
Sorry, poopy, I am trying. I am working my way through that fascinating book "Nature's Building Blocks" by John Emsley, which devotes a chapter to each element in turn, in alphabetical order. I have reached Tantalum and so far the nearest I have come to that melting-point is Radium which melts at 700C. I'll carry on.

Oh, give over, EDDIES. Of course you won't find graphite in the Periodic Table because it already there, called Carbon. Graphite is pure Carbon, an element.
