human waste compost is it safe
Hi, I work with a garden based charity which is considering installing a composting toilet. Many of the people using the toilet are drug users The majority however will just be taking the usual prescription drugs including oral contraceptives, blood pressure tablets etc My question is will any of these drugs end up in the food which will be produced using this compost will it be safe to sell and could it possibly be called organic Thanks

the use of slurry from sewage works as fertiliser for foods destined for human consumption was outlawed 2 or 3 years ago i believe.
I used to design and build landfill sites and many now have seperate cells constructed to allow for the disposal of human slurry due to it not being allowed to be used as fertiliser

Years ago a friend of mine used to use fertiliser from a sewage farm on his allotment. It was dry, perfectly odourless and completely inoffensive.
He discovered that many seeds pass through the body unharmed, so while the owners of neighbouring allotments were studiously growing tomato plants he was continually pulling his up as weeds.
His wife, a botanist, was quite excited about some of the exotic plants she found.
