Say I wanted to filter some liquid that contains different elements and minerals, and wanted to filter out certain ones. Is there a method of calculating the size of a particle to as to determine the correct filter size, and what would that be?

you can use a microscope to measure the size and a flow cytometer to sort it (depending on size)
