Rabbits have a herbivorous diet so have a dental arrangement to suit. Although not a rodent, a rabbit has teeth similar to one, with grinding molars at the side and incisors in front but, unlike rodents, rabbits have 4 of these incisors at the top and 2 at the bottom. The incisors only have enamel on the inside so the teeth grow in an arc.
The incisors as well as the molars grow continuously so need to be ground down by grinding the teeth when chewing grass.
Many pet rabbits are not fed the right diet and get overgrown teeth which need to be trimmed by a vet. Do not try this yourself as incisors are like glass and are easily shattered.
Bad dental alignment in some breeds can be hereditary.
