Router and a Firewall.

What should be the perfect position of the firewall and the router in the network?
Should router be preceeded by the firewall or firewall should be preceeded by the router?

My guess is that the firewall would be on the outside where it protects everything connected to the router. If you set it up the other way around, you'd need a separate firewall for everything connected to the router and the router itself would also be vulnerable.
