Why is it that a total solar eclipse occurs at new moon and a lunar eclipse occurs at full moon?

Think about where the three bodies (i.e. Sun, Moon and Earth) need to be in order for the two different eclipses to take place.

Use some household objects and a torch for the Sun, move them around and line them up in straight lines, if it helps.
