Is a solar eclipse only visible from a small part of the earth, which would vary, depending on how far the earth is rotated and when the moon lines up correctly?

Correcto-mundo! You'd be in the moon's shadow to view one in totality... but that area or "umbral area" consists of less than 1% of Earth's entire surface area.
