underlying chemistry of the mercurous nitrate stress test
1 Answers
I have been testing brass samples for residual stress.Very briefly, the sample is degreased with acetone, then 'pickled' in 40% nitric acid, immersed in dilute mercurous nitrate solution for 15 minutes and examined for cracks under 15X magnification. Can anybody please explain the theory/ reactions behind this procedure ? (the more detail the better and any good references.)
