my brother researches science but wants to know if you have to keep buying books or if you can find equivlant information on the world wide interweb.

When I did science (many years ago to PhD level) I think I bought 1 book. For the rest I used a library or research papers (often found in a library). I think nowerdays you can download some research papers or, most likely, have to subscribe to sites that publish them. Knowing the internet, you could probably get hold of tons of information: the problem being knowing how correct it is.
